Games security planning on track

The Commonwealth Games Federation has deemed recent comments as to security concerns in Delhi 2010 as ill informed and confirmed that, based on advice from its own independent experts, security planning for the Games is on track.

CGF President, Michael Fennell, says that while security remains a key issue for Delhi, the relevant Indian authorities are working well to ensure a secure environment for the Games.

“The CGF regards the safety and security of the Games, for athletes and spectators alike, as being of paramount importance and of the highest priority,” Fennell said.

“In 2005, the CGF appointed leading international experts, Intelligent Risks Pty Ltd (IR), as our Security Advisers for Delhi 2010.

“IR has vast Commonwealth, Olympic and multi-sport games experience, and importantly, has a detailed knowledge of what is actually being done with security for Delhi.

“A number of recent media reports on Games’ security come from comments by those who have not worked on any aspect of security planning for the Delhi 2010 Games, and do not have any serious knowledge of the detailed plans across all aspects being put in place by local authorities.”

“In contrast, IR is deeply involved with all levels of the security plan, and its analysis is being...

Progress but urgency still required

Commonwealth Games Federation President, Michael Fennell, has confirmed that the draft report of the CGF Coordination Commission has pointed to real progress in the organisation of the 2010 Delhi Games.

Speaking at a media conference in Delhi following his attendance at a Board meeting of the Organising committee, Mr Fennell noted the Commission’s advice that its December visit was its best to date, citing significant progress with operational planning within the Organising Committee since the CGF’s General Assembly.

Mr. Fennell also noted the ongoing commitment of the management and staff of the Organising Committee to address the concerns previously raised.

“Once again I would like to commend and thank the Government of India on their unequivocal support for the Games including the recent approvals of the revised budgets.

“While I note improvement in operational areas, the Organising Committee and its partners must maintain the momentum that they have now gained across all functional areas.

However, on the issue of venue construction, Mr. Fennell expressed great disappointment at the CoCom’s report on the delayed delivery of the venues, and in particular, how the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and the SP Mukherjee Swimming Complex were so far behind schedule.

“We have continuously received assurances on the...

Funding Boost for Glasgow 2014

By 2014 release.

Glasgow 2014 Limited, the Organising Committee for the Commonwealth Games, has announced that funding for the event will increase to £454 million.

The funding boost follows a year of detailed planning for the Games and a thorough review of the budget required to deliver an outstanding Games for Glasgow and Scotland.

A detailed risk register developed by the Games partners has provided a sound basis to increase the funding available for contingencies. This level of planning would not have been appropriate or cost effective at the time of the bid. A number of factors including Legislative changes, and in particular rising broadcasting costs, have contributed to the budget
increase.

The additional funding will come from a mixture of public and private money. The Scottish Government will provide an additional £39 million and a £20 million reserve fund, Glasgow City Council will contribute an extra £9 million and the Organising Committee will raise an additional £13 million through its commercial activities.

The review has been verified by financial advisers PricewaterhouseCoopers. All partners are determined to ensure that the Games are funded adequately and properly and every effort has been made to ensure efficiency savings wherever possible.

Lord Smith, Chairman...

Fennell and Kalmadi make joint statement

LONDON, October 29, 2009: Mr Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi and Mr Michael Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, met here to discuss and resolve issues which have arisen over the past few weeks.

It is agreed that there have been misunderstandings and unfortunate media statements and reports that have created a regrettable set of circumstances. However, we feel that is critical that our attention is focussed entirely on those functional areas that are essential to the successful celebration of the Games in 2010 and no useful purpose would be served by spending precious time on those issues and we will put this behind us.

We have agreed that we will continue to work together as partners, fully recognising and respecting our individual roles and ensuring that our attention is not diverted from meeting all the targets that have been agreed upon.
We also met with office-bearers of the Indian Olympic Association present in London and the Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Hon’ble Dr. M. S. Gill and informed them of our understanding and all agreed that we must now move forward with the sole objective of guaranteeing the successful celebration of the 2010 Games in Delhi.

Queen's Baton Relay starts journey

The Queen’s Baton Relay has started its historic journey to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the opening ceremony of Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The relay remains one of the greatest traditions of the Commonwealth Games, having been the curtain-raiser to every Games since 1958.

On Thursday October 29, Her Majesty entrusted the baton containing her ‘message to the athletes’ in a magnificent ceremony at Buckingham Palace, with the President of India, Pratibha Patil, also present.

The Baton will now travel through all the Commonwealth nations – a historic journey that will cover a distance of more than 170,000 kilometers in 236 days.

On its 100 day national tour, the Baton will visit every Indian state including the capital. By the end of the epic journey the Baton will have covered a staggering 190,000 kilometers in 336 days, one of the longest in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

Before leaving England the Baton will appear at various high-profile sporting events including the England vs. Australia match at Twickenham on Saturday 7th November, where the Rugby 7’s squad will parade the Baton.

The Baton will also be on display at Droitwich High School, Worcestershire on Monday 2nd November, where...

Hooper has CGF board’s full support

Calls by the 2010 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee for the removal from Delhi of the Commonwealth Games Federation CEO, Mike Hooper, have been rejected.

Speaking from his home back in Jamaica after his recent visit to India, CGF President, Michael Fennell, said that Hooper had a vital role to play with the Delhi Games.

We are naturally very surprised and disappointed in receiving this request to remove Mr Hooper from Delhi given his unquestionable commitment to the successful celebration of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi,” Fennell said.

I have responded to Mr. Kalmadi's letter and public statements in writing, recording that Mr. Hooper enjoys the full support of the CGFs Executive Board, and that he is an outstanding Chief Executive and leader of the CGF management team.”

“He is totally dedicated to the Commonwealth Games movement and we consider that such a personal attack on him is unwarranted.

“Instead of attacking Mr Hooper, I urge the Organising Committee to focus on the issues raised by us in Delhi following our General Assembly on Monday, and to commit to working collaboratively with all stakeholders on addressing these matters with urgency.

“That is the clear commitment of the CGF Board, Mr Hooper and his staff.

“I...
