Targa Tasmania’s Rookie Rallye is the perfect event for those tarmac rally competitors who are not sure if the full-length Targa event is right for them.

Held over the first two days of the rally, it offers first-time competitors a great mix of stages around Launceston, and gives them a taste of what the ‘real’ Targa Tasmania is all about.

The winning crew in the Rookie Rallye receive a free entry into the following year’s Targa Tasmania, which is a real drawcard for the shorter event.

In 2012, the competition looks likely to be dominated by a number of four-wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions, with a good mix of Porsche, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Ford, Nissan and Toyota entries to spice up the competition.

Given that the Rookie Rallye is for Targa Tasmania debutantes, picking a winner isn’t easy.

Rookie Rallye competitiors begin their event at the Temco Prologue in George Town, and conclude in Launceston after two days of competition, on Thursday, April 19.
